Top Ten Romantic Rock Songs
Madly Juicy have covered you for music this valentine’s day, here’s our top ten of some of the classics and some of the more modern Romantic Rock songs to help you find love this February.
10. Deftones – Digital Bath
It’s difficult to justify a Deftones song as ‘Romantic’ but ‘Digital Bath’ comes pretty close. One for the more Rock than Pop Rock this song is a musical trip through a whirlwind of emotions – both positive and negative. Chino Moreno’s bursting out cries and creeping drones fit perfectly over the delicate guitar riffs. In its own way ‘Digital Bath’ is as good lyrically as it is musically, lyrics like “You move like I want to, to see like your eyes do” aren’t obvious love song material but they work with this song.
9. Avril Lavigne – Innocence
Bringing in one for the girls Avril’s ‘Innocence’ from the album ‘The Best Damn Thing’ is one of many romantic ballads from the singer/songwriter. Telling the story of a past relationship that’s been and gone and now the feelings that she has to overcome to get to grips with. Lyrics like ‘This moment, is perfect, please don’t go away’ will create the perfect valentine’s day setting and might even make you a little emotional.
8. U2 – With Or Without You
U2 have a knack for writing a Romantic Rock song and ‘With Or Without You’ is one of their best. Showcasing progressive rock at its very simplest the track starts with subtle guitar notes underneath Bono’s passionate out cries. The honesty in Bono’s voice in the words “I can’t live/With or without you” bring a sense of helpless love and uncontrollable desire. One of the very best from ‘The Joshua Tree’ album and it sits at number 8 on our countdown.
7. Oasis – Wonderwall
Noel Gallagher wrote a masterpiece with ‘Wonderwall’ originally meant to be a song for his ‘imaginary friend’ Wonderwall has been embraced as an acoustic love song shared between lovers in despair. Sung over a simple riff and haunting strings the lyrics “maybe, you’re gonna be the one that saves me” could be classed as slightly depressing but nevertheless who isn’t slightly down when their out of love?
6. Stone Sour – Through Glass
Corey Taylor’s side project Stone Sour have produced a modern heartstring player with ‘Through Glass’ A soothing acoustic ballad that builds on Corey’s vocals gaining momentum throughout. A song for the heartbroken but optimistic ‘Through Glass’ provides the perfect platform for a Romantic Rock karaoke, starting off with calming acoustics but ending on a powerful chorus that will have you singing ‘The stars shine for you’ over and over again.
5. Bryan Adams – (Everything I do) I Do It For You
A classic of our generation that has to be included in a list of this caliber, the lyrics feel like they have been taken right out of every lover’s heart. Starting off with an uplifting piano piece and moving onto thumping drums and lightly plucked guitar solos its one of those songs that will always be a valentine’s day special. One from the back catalog but it still remains one of the best and is at number 5 in our top ten.
4. Coldplay – The Scientist
Another song that uses the piano to pull at our emotions and tell us to find that someone special. ‘The Scientist’ tells the story of a love story that’s come to a sudden end and reminds us that it can never be an easy journey. Chris Martins vocals remain as sincere as ever on this track and perhaps not the most cheerful song to spend your Tuesday the 14th listening to but it’s certain that most people can relate to it. Coldplay deserve a place among a top ten like this and they sit at 4th.
3. Plain White T’s – Hey There Delilah
A clear favorite for the teenage valentine’s scene, this song tells the story of a long distance relationship and the struggles of everyday life. Written straight from the heart, the simplicity of the guitar and Tom Higgenson’s voice go hand in hand to create the perfect love song. Confined to a small budget Tom can’t afford to treat his girl with presents but he talks about the future and their life together “Someday I’ll pay the bills with this guitar”. A song for the dreamer in all of us.
2. Snow Patrol – Run
A choice between two of the best from Snow Patrol – ‘Chasing Cars’ and ‘Run’ wasn’t easy but the latter came out on top. As with most of the best songs a catchy chorus and powerful lyrics are what makes it a popular crowd pleaser. This song is about leaving someone you love and the thought of knowing you’re not going to see them for a while and how you can comfort them. Lyrics like “even if you cannot hear my voice, I’ll be right beside you dear” are perfect for that moment when you have to spend time away from the one you love. This modern anthem claims number 2 spot on our podium.
1. Aerosmith – I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing
At no.1 we have one of the most powerful Rock ballads of all time, when you put Romantic and Rock together most people will agree that this is one of the greatest. Introduced with harmonic strings and orchestra like drums the build up to the lyrics “I could stay awake, just to hear you breathing” are worth the wait and from then we get the chorus “I don’t wanna close my eyes, I don’t wanna fall asleep, cause I miss you babe”. Played out during the film Armageddon Steven Tyler’s screams towards the end are as heart wrenching and intense as they are moving. Aerosmith runs out clear winner here and not only wins our countdown of best romantic rock songs but possibly best love song of all time too.. but that’s a much tougher list.
